While it makes the movie's plot move forward, in reality, the US military would never subsume its responsibility for its officers to another military command. While it allowed Black enlisted men to be used by French military command during WWI, this was due to racial prejudice of the era and was never allowed to occur again. An American officer couldn't be transferred to a foreign command as they swore their service oath and signed their service contract with the American military branch under which they serve.
