In the film, Billy the Kid is killed by his boyhood friend Jim Sherwood. Billy purposely goes for his gun with his opposite hand and lets Sherwood kill him. In real life, Billy the Kid was killed by Pat Garrett and when Garrett killed him, it was dark and Billy was unarmed.
