When Laura's boyfriend gives her the gun he tells her to fire all nine shots into Richard and states that there wasn't a court in the world that would convict her if she shot him on her own property, this is not good advice. While states' law vary about protection of self and property, one can use only the necessary force to stop an intruder (which simply brandishing a weapon might accomplish). If Laura shot Richard nine times, this could be seen by the court as unnecessary and unreasonable force, and it would make a claim of self defense difficult.
