Not once, even in passing, do the police consider the possibility that Amy simply ran away - which would seem to be a serious oversight on their part. However it can be said that is the whole point. A major point Amy makes upon her return is the shoddy way the police handled the investigation. Also the movie itself is something of a commentary on how the media and police handle cases like this. Them overlooking the possibility of Amy running away is a key part of that.
