At the end, the king Jarol uses effectively the lava to melt all of the ice walls and kill all the creatures and plants (including all of his enemies), between his castle and Nekron's. Why he didn't do it in the first place? There is no reason to think that Jarol was worried about all the life killed in the process, because he did it even knowing that his daughter was in the ice castle.
