(at around 20 mins) When one of the alien ships fly over Los Angeles, you can see the shade of the ship is moving across the city and leaving it in darkness as the ship slowly obscures the view of sun. Apparently they only used a simple filter to create this effect. Because if you watch closely, you can see the buildings still have contrasted lighting on their different sides caused by the bright, direct and sharp sunlight. If a huge object like that ship covered the sun for real, all the lighting on the buildings would be softer and with little contrast.
