Martin struggles with what to do when he discovers Aaron has multiple personality disorder, and one of his personalities committed the crime. He states he cannot change Aaron's plea from "not guilty" to "not guilty by reason of insanity." Regardless of whether it is untrue about the plea change, first-degree murder cases--and especially capital murder cases--are months if not a few years in the making, so in reality Martin would not have to go to trial immediately before a psychologist has had a chance to evaluate the defendant and before both sides thoroughly evaluate all the evidence.
