When Major Salt removes his helmet in the village, the elder assures Daniels that it's okay because the virus is not passed through the air. Not only is Daniels unlikely to take the man's word for it and bypass the isolation protocol he originally ordered, but the village would have been too small a sample size for anyone--especially an untrained elder--to observe the pathogen and be sure of how it is transmitted.
