When waiting for the first drop ship Hicks lights a flare. A minute later he lights another to replace the one that is burning out. When retrieving Newt, Ripley leaves a trail of lit flares so she can find her way back. Despite the passage of time, they are still burning when she returns. Hicks actually lights another because the landing party has walked a distance from the first flare between cuts. Furthermore, Ripley obviously lights a different kind of flare which is meant to burn a lot longer.
