In the opening sequence, the mothership moves over the Moon, blotting out the plaque left during the first moon landing and everything else for 350 miles (given as its approximate size). And yet nobody on Earth notices a thing - not amateur astronomers in their back yards, not NASA (whose job it is to notice). It isn't till a signal is detected that anyone pays attention.
