Maverick tries to conventionally train the pilots on the flight course, but they fail to complete the mission within its parameters. It's only when he's taken off the mission that he flies it himself and proves that it can be done. If this were a real exercise, the flight instructor would fly the course as early as possible to show the pilots how it should be done, and they would work towards achieving the parameters.
