The first alien is born about the size of a grapefruit, small enough to plausibly coexist inside Ledward's body without killing him until the moment it bursts out. But exactly two minutes later, when Faris is shooting at it in the cargo bay, it's the size of a small dog. Of course, part of the life cycle of this exotic bio-engineered species is how quickly it grows.
