Near the end of the movie when Earl and Valentine are trying to get back to the rocky outcrop after the explosion, the graboid pops up where Burt and Heather could've easily shot it. Instead they shoot in the air and try to scare it off.Most likely, their ingrained firearms discipline prevented them from firing when people were down range.
