A clue to the true identity of the killer is inadvertently given away in the first minute of the film. Before the killer stabs a prostitute to death in the opening scene, there is a shot of his pale, wrinkled hand turning on a cassette deck to play the song "This Old Man." This eliminates the possibility of Josh Brolin's youthful, olive skinned character James being the killer, despite several scenes hinting at him as such.
