Gimli is convinced that they will get a warm welcome from the dwarfs in Moria. When they enter the mines they find that the dwarfs have been wiped out some time ago. Surely Gimli would know something had gone wrong. However, though there was no news for some time, they didn't know exactly what happened, that the monster from the deep was awaken or that orcs are there. They just hoped it's not as bad as could be.
