It's never said who found the body, but you would think that the neighbors in the apartment building would have heard the shot and called police, but the police did not get there until Saturday and the murder happened Friday night, so it appears the neighbors did not hear anything, which would be odd.It could be surmised that the police had called Ann, as McPherson states that Ann had identified the body. Ann says that she would never forget the scream that Bessie (the maid) made when she saw Laura lying there, indicating that Ann was there first, as Bessie screaming would imply that she had gotten to work not knowing Laura had been murdered. So if Bessie got to work and Ann and the police were already there, it doesn't jibe with that when McPherson meets Bessie she tells him she put away the cheap scotch and washed the glasses *before* the cops got there on Saturday, making it seem like she was there first and had found the body. Bessie couldn't have tampered with the evidence if the police were already there, if Ann had been called by police to identify the body.
