When the terrorists are taking off in their 747, after the General detects that the aileron has been tampered with, he is applying forward/backward pressure on the controls but the controls look stuck. Forward/backward motion controls the elevators and other pitch controls. The ailerons help turn the plane, so the controls would have been jammed side-to-side, if at all.
