Frank Moses learns of the apparent death of Joe Matheson (Morgan Freeman's character) when he phones the care home, now a bustling crime scene. However, there is no reason for the care home staff or police to assume that Matheson has been killed; we see later (in a flashback reveal) that he was not killed or injured, so there *his* corpse wouldn't be present. If a corpse was left at the scene, it would have been that of his would-be assassin. As far as the staff or police would know, Matheson was missing, with evidence suggesting a serious altercation having taken place.
