Just after John gets thrown off the left wing of the terrorists' 747 - and we know he opened the fuel dump valve before hitting the ground - the aircraft swings onto the runway for take-off and opens throttles. Then when John utters his famed expletive and lights the fuel trail ablaze, the line of fire that follows the plane down the runway is seen to follow the #3 (RIGHT inboard) engine. But in the next shot, as the plane climbs higher, it's the #2 (LEFT inboard) engine that blows up, triggering an explosion of the entire plane.
