In Snape's class, when Hermione describes werewolves, she includes "they only respond to the calls of their own kind", but when Lupin turns into a werewolf, she can successfully fool him by imitating a werewolf howl. Even if ignoring the fact that Hermione never heard a werewolf howl, so she couldn't make a good imitation, Lupin should know the difference.
