When Kendall is tending to Dunker, it appears he is using a cable tie, or similar item. Cable ties, or tie wraps, had just become widely available in 1958, and they would hardly have existed in the 1860s.Maybe it was a belt. In 1958, Maurus C. Logan introduced the Ty-Rap®, designed for airplane wire harnesses. On June 24, 1958, a patent for the Ty-Rap was submitted. The movie was filmed in October that year and they were unlikely to have been available to the prop department by then.
