The film begins in New York City. Alex takes Susan to a restaurant at "the beach", supposedly on Long Island with the address on his mailbox - "22 Long Island Road", but the whole area is distinctly Californian and not anywhere near NYC, with cliffs down to the ocean and mountains in the background.
