Since the aliens can, and do, take the children themselves, without the parents' help and indeed in spite of interference from them, there appears to be no reason for the encoded message. If so, then Lucinda (who has left the encoded message) suffered for nothing. The message does not trigger Caleb's ability to hear the whispers, as the girl Abby hears them, too, and without benefit of such a trigger.
