When Clara comes to visit Doc at his barn with her "broken" telescope, in theory there's nothing actually wrong with it even though she says it was damaged. What she describes, rotating a knob one way makes the image fuzzy and the other way makes it clearer, implies that's a properly functioning focusing system. This was most likely a ruse just to give her a reason to go visit Doc Brown.
