Usually in war movies the numbers of the groups and squadrons are high enough that viewers know they are fictional. In this movie, however, the unit is designated the "3rd Fighter Group," an unusually low number. There was no "3rd Fighter Group" in the Army Air Force. There was a "3rd Bombardment Group (Light)" that fought in the Pacific Theater of Operations.
