When Van Heusen detects an open hatch, one of his crew admits to accidentally leaving it open while throwing out empty crates. Yet it is shown later that there is an inner hatch, as well as an outer hatch for the airlocks. The outer can't open until the inner is sealed shut and vice-versa, as shown when Carruthers does the space walk. So both doors could not have been left open for the creature to get aboard. The only hatch with no outer or inner was the double door-hatch in the control room, yet that's where Van Heusen sat at the controls. No doubt, he'd have noticed if it was left open.
