As Randy is making John dig the grave, there is a bulky tarp lying on the ground in front of Randy. After Randy falls in the hole, he is lying on a tarp that was not in the hole previously, and there is no longer a tarp on the ground outside the hole.
The DVD "alternate & extended scenes" reveals that the tarp contains the dead body of a character edited out of the film, "Lt. Gates" played by Danny Trejo. As John finishes digging, Randy tells him "Put him in the hole" and John drags the tarp in.
