The investigation is seemingly called off all at once when Amy is found, and during her questioning at the hospital she feigns discomfort and all questions, including those that are crucial to placing Desi at the scene, are dropped and never resumed. The case is ruled closed based on Amy's word alone, though there are several high-profile real-world cases of this not happening and very different results being found (such as a case of Jennifer Wilbanks, the "runaway bride" who ran away in 2005 and faked her own abduction).
