When the police allow Dr. Shirley to make a phone call, the dial tone sound would never have been produced with phone company equipment of the time. At the time this movie was set, dial tones were only just becoming common with the advent of direct dialing without going through an operator, and the equipment of the time produced more of a buzz than the hum of a modern dial tone.
