In the opening number the baker sells croissants. Croissants were first invented in Vienna, Austria (not France) in 1683. Legend has it they were invented by a baker to celebrate the defeat of the Ottoman Empire by Christian forces at the Battle of Vienna. They were given their crescent shape because the Ottoman flag (today also on the flag of Turkey) has a crescent moon on it. Croissants were not baked and sold in France until 1839.
