Kitala explains that the magnetised metal fish will always point North. However, in the sailing sequences the fish is always pointing in a straight line from the stern to the bow of the boats. In these scenes the boats are sailing South or South-West towards England, therefore the fish would in reality be pointing in the opposite direction.
