When the Stooges first arrive at Columbia, a sound man shows them a sort of "magic box" on which he can push buttons to create sound effects for their act. He calls them "Foley effects". In fact, Foley recording is the technique of recording sound effects live and in real time while screening the picture, and although sound man Jack Foley was already beginning to develop this technique over at Universal, it was not yet known by his name.
