At altitude 500,000 feet, where there is less than 1/100000 the air at sea level, the pilot radios his speed to base as "6000 miles an hour airspeed" But airspeed at such an altitude would be effectively zero, since the airspeed reading is the result of air pressure in the pitot tube. No air = no pressure = no airspeed.
