Annie's throat was slashed with a knife in the first film. The scene was strategically shot and edited for rating purposes. The Shape was strangling her but due to her struggling he (off camera) motions as though grabbing something (a knife) and makes a forward sweeping motion with his hand/arm across Annies neck area - a sound affect is heard indicating a 'finishing move' and Annie slumps forward ceasing her struggle.
