Chrysler / Dodge never produced a 4.9 Liter (300 cubic inches) V8 engine. A correct V8 engine for a 1974 Dodge Challenger could have been a 318 (5.2L) with only a 2 barrel carburetor or 360 (5.9 L) at least with a 4 barrel carburetor but only rated at 245 HP / 320 ft-lbs torque. Even the then- top-of-the-line 360/ 4 barrel was barely enough to keep this line "interesting" relative to the 383, 440, and 426 Hemi options discontinued after model year 1971.
