Several times in the film, Bowie and Travis argue over what should be done to fight Santa Anna. Bowie wanted to 'burn all of Bejar, including this old mission' and conduct a guerrilla campaign by challenging the Mexican army at every river crossing. Travis desires to stay and fortify the Alamo.Historically, they were swapped. Bowie was sent to San Antonio to recover arms and ammunition, demolish the fortifications and reunite when finished. When he arrived at the Alamo and saw the extensive amount of fortifications and cannon, Bowie changed his mind and decided to stay. Travis, being a cavalry officer, did not want to stay inside a fort. He stayed in San Antonio because he became commander after Colonel McNeil, the original commander, departed to see his family.
