One scene, just prior to the invasion, Lt. Col. Vandervoort (John Wayne) demonstrates to men of his battalion of the 82nd Airborne (All American) the toy cricket for identifying one another in the dark. Historically, only men of the 101st Airborne (Screaming Eagles) received the crickets for the invasion, and they were issued several days before the invasion and not a few hours prior.
