At 0:45 when the alien fires the weapon at the soldiers in the doorway, the beam is discharged at about 45 degrees, upwards. The next shot shows it hitting the stairs in front of the doorway, coming down at about 45 degrees.A beam of energy would not change direction, with a gravity as weak as the earth's.
