Mrs. Elrod is supposed to be paying attention to the television as the news reporter is announcing the murders and Michael Myers' escape, but during the latter's theft of the kitchen knife there is a clear view of the TV and the screen is bouncing out of frequency. You can hear the reporter but the visuals aren't there.
