Both the News article and Prof. Elwood refer to the fishing boat Fortune as a ketch. A ketch is a sailing vessel with 2-3 masts with a aft mast shorter than the main mast. The Fortune isn't seen with any masts at all and when the beast turns it over, propellers can be seen briefly.
