Aurora (and therefore the crew, possibly others) was supposed to return to Earth after spending a year at the colony. That would be impossible since a basic premise of the movie is that there is no way to place passengers back in stasis after they are awake.
Jim mentions the procedures they went trough before leaving Earth, there are possibly similar hibernation centers on Homestead II.
