Characters, including a professional potter, are seen putting their eye straight against the inspection keyhole in the front of a kiln. As the operating temperature of a ceramics kiln is about 1750 degrees, this would have caused certain immediate blindness. To peer through a kiln's inspection hole, one must approach with care to no more than a foot or so away.
