During the battle over the bridge numerous cannon are firing at the Confederates, however, many of them, including two very large cannon, have no recoil. Also, the angles of the mortars being used are much too low; mortars are meant shoot their shells in high, arching trajectories to drop plunging fire on their targets, not low and direct, like shooting a rifle.
