During the Vietnam War montage, a grenade is thrown into a tunnel. Forrest is handed a pistol and he proceeds into the tunnel to make sure it's clear. Tunnels were small and cramped and the men ("tunnel rats") chosen for this duty (were usually the shortest men available (usually shorter than 5'6") so they could maneuver more easily. Forrest Gump is six feel tall, which would make him an unlikely candidate for the mission.
