Union brigades assaulting the stone wall at Fredericksburg are ordered to halt to trade shots with the Confederates. This did not happen as it would be suicide to stand in the open and fire against an entrenched enemy. What stopped the Union assaults was the heavy fire that convinced Union officers to not sacrifice their men to charge and instead order them to lay down and firing at a distance.
