During her final transmission Ripley identifies herself as "3rd officer." While she was originally third in command behind Commanding Officer Dallas and First Officer Kane, the deaths of those two placed her in command. However, at this point in the story, the Nostromo no longer exists, there is no one else to command, and Ripley's permanent employment status is still as a 3rd Officer. It would be rather ridiculous to title one's self as "Acting Captain" or "Commanding Officer Pro-Tem" given all that has occurred.
