There are no known electromagnetic frequencies that can penetrate bedrock let alone denser portions of the earth; thus, there would be no way for anyone on the surface of the earth to either track or communicate with Virgil's crew; it is a complete impossibility. Virgil would be on her own for the duration, and thus would still be ignorant of earth's back-up plan to kick start the core with a supercharged earthquake generator.
