When the survivors are leaving the island near the end, the helicopter seems to be heading toward the setting sun, i.e. westward. Since the island is situated 130 miles WEST of Costa Rica, they are headed deeper into the Pacific. Unless a ship is waiting for the helicopter further offshore, they are in deep trouble.
