The whole reason why Stanley was sent to Camp Greenlake is because his family was unable to afford an attorney to defend him in court. However, ever since the Gideon vs. Wainwright Supreme Court case in 1963, it is required by law that the state provide the defendant with an attorney in the event that he/she cannot afford one. Stanley should have been provided with an attorney for his trial so that his family wouldn't have to wait months later to have a lawyer take him out of Camp Greenlake.
