Jeannie apparently did not recognize Ed Rooney after she discovers he broke into her house but this should be impossible given the pair go to the same school. However, given that she entered her house expecting to find her brother, and she suddenly saw someone who wasn't her brother, her parents, or anyone else she'd expect to find at her house, her first reaction would be to do exactly what she did.
